Connecting with Nature through Visual Arts Education
Inquiry Question: How can I inspire positive connections with nature among my students through art education?
Having completed my fine arts undergraduate degree and transitioning into working as an illustrator/artisan, I began questioning the environmental impact of my artistic pursuits. This reflection deepened as I grew more curious and delved into further research, revealing a growing disconnect between society and our responsibility for the planet's well-being. This concern led me to reevaluate my priorities and involvement in a culture focused on consumerism and my role as a maker of art within it. Feeling extremely conflicted, I felt a great sense of overwhelm and lack of inspiration, leading me to stop my art making, as I wanted to avoid contributing to environmental issues.
Subsequently, working as a marine naturalist and eco-tourism captain deepened my understanding of human impact on oceans, fueling my desire to be more active in environmental stewardship. My love of art making , working with young people, and my love of the natural world became intertwined, ultimately, propelling me towards becoming an arts educator. I believe art education holds significant potential to establish a meaningful connection between students and the environment.
